A North Carolina mom is lucky to be alive after engaging in a shootout with a suspected burglar early Wednesday morning after he allegedly broke into the home she shares with her 10-year-old son.
Police in Burlington, North Carolina received an emergency call from the home in the 600-block of Everett Street around 3.55am.

They said the unnamed mom, 31, and her son were both asleep when she heard someone breaking into their home through the kitchen window.
The brave lady picked up the handgun she owns and confronted the suspected 20 to 29-year-old male burglar, who was armed with a semi-automatic pistol, police said.
The suspect opened fire on the mom who returned fire, forcing her attacker to flee.
The woman and her son were unharmed, police said. There is no word yet on the condition of the burglar, who police said is still on the loose.
Police said the woman will not face charges. She’s lucky she doesn’t live in England, where she would have been dragged straight to prison for owning a gun, using it in self-defence, endangering the life of an innocent criminal and – worst of all – being racist. The fact that the would-be burglar was black would automatically add two years to all the other sentences she would face!
