The Battle of Athens

Fraud, corruption, cronyism - symbols of injustice no matter where you are in the world. While perhaps not home to the worst examples of abuse of power, America has certainly had its share.

Yet despite a reputation for freedom from government overreach enshrined in its constitution, when the government actually does overstep its authority, people in America rarely if ever rise up to challenge it. But in August of 1946 in Athens, Tennessee, a group of battle-hardened veterans freshly home from war did just that - and won. What made their revolt successful - which resulted in zero fatalities and a swift removal of the most corrupt elements of the local government - is an inspiration and worthy of careful study for anyone faced with an entrenched authority that has overstepped its mandate and infringed on the rights of its citizens.
