Follow @KnightsTempOrgThe First Crusade ran from 1096 to 1099. It began when the Byzantine Emperor asked for military support from the West against the Seljuk Turks.
This call was met with an enthusiastic popular response across all social classes in western Europe. Crowds of predominantly poor Christians were the first to respond, but after they were defeated members of the high nobility and their followers embarked in late summer 1096 and arrived at Constantinople between November and April the following year.
The crusaders liberated Jerusalem on 7 July 1099. After this the majority of the crusaders returned home.
