The First Templar Church in Scotland

The First Templar Church in Scotland

Temple is a village in Midlothian, Scotland. Situated to the south of Edinburgh, it lies on the east bank of the river South Esk.

The name "Temple" refers to its historical connection to the Knights Templar. In 1237, the town name was recorded as "Ballentrodoch", from the Scottish Gaelic Baile nan Trodach, which means "town of the warriors". This is a reference to the Knights Templar, whose founder Hugues de Payens was granted the lands here by David I of Scotland in 1128 - the very year that the Council of Troyes recognised our Order.

Balantrodach became the principle Templar commandery in Scotland.
