The Fighting Irish - on both sides in America's bloody civil war

The fighting Irish! The phrase is well-known, but how many people know that Irish regiments fought with great bravery and distinction on both sides in America's War Between the States?

Here are two songs from the time, each about the Irish, one form each side.

It is said that in some of the clashes that went on for several days, Irishmen from the the Union and Confederate forces crossed the lines and met each other at night to discuss plans to unite and take their fighting experience back to fight the British in their native land once the American civil war was over!
