Britain’s “best-loved building”

Durham Cathedral is one of the great churches of Europe and is widely rated as Britain’s “best-loved building”.

Set grandly on a rocky promontory next to the Castle with the medieval city huddled below and the river sweeping round, the profile of the World Heritage Site is instantly recognisable.

We have to take issue with Rick Steves’ suggestion that the English were more or less barbarians before the ‘civilising’ Normans arrived, but apart from that he’s done a great introduction to this wonderful treasure of our heritage.
