That's the bonkers conclusion of the UK government's anti-terror strategists. The liberal bureaucrats' running the Prevent scheme are desperate to be seen to be tackling white and Christian 'radicals' so as to 'balance' their very necessary targeting of Islamic extremists.
A review of the Government’s controversial counter-terrorism strategy has found that the Prevent programme had flagged material that “falls well short of the extremism threshold”.
Joining C S Lewis on the Government’s blacklist was his friend and fellow writer J R R Tolkien, George Orwell’s dystopian novel 1984, and even a BBC documentary series following former Conservative minister Michael Portillo on train journeys across the country. All were on the Prevent list as potential signs of 'far-right' Doubleplusungoodthink (as George Orwell would have put it).
Since 2011 Prevent has been more focused on ‘non-violent extremism’. Its definition of extremism — “vocal or active opposition to fundamental British values, including democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of different faiths and beliefs” — has been widely criticised for endangering free speech.
At least the Government has now confirmed that it will accept the Independent Review’s recommendations on Prevent. But the very fact that the works of classic Christian authors such as Lewis and Tolkien can even be suspected of encouraging 'extremism' is in fact a clear warning of the way in which liberal extremism is poisoning society and threatening our freedom and faith.
