Trump Pledge Honoured As US Troops Head For Home

Donald Trump has kept one of his most important first-term election promises: To bring US soldiers home from Syria. Over the last 24 hours, the Pentagon has confirmed a total withdrawal from the key northern Syrian city of Manbij.

The American troops are being replaced by Syrian and Russian forces, who have moved quickly to protect the Kurdish residents from Turkish aggression.

The long-overdue restoration of Syrian sovereignty took place just hours after President Trump tweeted that Assad "wants naturally to protect the Kurds" and that the problem should be left to local powers.

The main US base in Manbij was filmed empty of US forces, and American convoys were spotted heading home, pulling out of the city as Syrian national forces entered, following Sunday's historic deal between the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and the Assad government.
